Welcome to Pet Health News, our weekly roundup of what's new in dog and cat health. We keep it short, plain, and sourced, so you can spend less time scrolling and more time snuggling. (We're a pet store, not a vet clinic, so always check with your own veterinarian before changing anything.)
Candy is the biggest risk tonight
Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, and darker chocolate is worse — baking and dark chocolate carry the most theobromine, which pets can't metabolize well. Sugar-free candy and gum sweetened with xylitol are even more dangerous for dogs, causing a rapid, life-threatening drop in blood sugar in small amounts. Raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, and even empty wrappers are a hazard if swallowed, risking an intestinal blockage. Keep the candy bowl up high and out of paw's reach, and remind kids and guests not to share treats with pets, however tempting those puppy-dog eyes might be. Sources: ARL Boston, Pumpkin
Costumes: comfort before cuteness
If your pet wears a costume tonight, it should never restrict movement, breathing, hearing, or vision, and it should have no small or dangling parts to chew off and swallow. If your pet freezes, hides, pins its ears back, or tries to back out of the outfit, skip it — a festive bandana gives the Halloween spirit without the stress. Never leave a costumed pet unsupervised. Doorbell stress and escape risk
The constant doorbell, strangers in costumes, and doors opening all night can overwhelm pets, especially skittish ones. Set up a quiet room away from the front door with familiar bedding, water, and favorite toys, and keep doors and windows secure. Before the trick-or-treaters arrive, check that ID tags and microchip information are up to date. Swap lit jack-o-lanterns for battery candles, and keep fake cobwebs and decorations out of chewing range. Source: ARL Boston
If something goes wrong
If you think your pet ate something toxic, call your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 right away — don't wait for symptoms to show. Source: AngelCare Vet
